Short answer: if you have a physical location in Nepal, buy a working website and a properly configured Google Business Profile first, paid ads second, SEO third, and social media management only when there is something worth amplifying. The most commonly sold service in Kathmandu is social media management, and for most businesses it is the wrong place to start.

Why digital marketing services in Nepal are bought in the wrong order

Almost every digital marketing agency in Nepal sells the same list: social media management, SEO, Google Ads, Facebook Ads, content, web design, branding. The lists are close to interchangeable. What differs, and what nobody puts in the proposal, is the order.

Order matters more than selection. Running Facebook Ads to a website that takes eleven seconds to load on mobile does not produce leads, it produces a bill. Paying for SEO on a site carrying a leftover noindex tag from the build produces nothing at all, and I have seen that run for a year. Posting daily to a page with four hundred followers while your Google Business Profile lists the wrong category means you are invisible to everyone actively searching for you and busy entertaining people who are not.

So the useful way to read the list below is not as a menu. It is as a sequence with prerequisites.

Layer one: the things everything else depends on

A website that works

Not a beautiful website. A working one: it loads quickly on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data, it says what you do in the first screen, it shows a phone number that can be tapped, and it does not hide the price behind a contact form if your competitors publish theirs.

This is the foundation because every other channel sends traffic here. Improving the site improves the return on all of them simultaneously. Buying traffic to a site that does not convert is the most common way money disappears in this market. What a site should cost is a separate question, and I have written it up in detail in what a website actually costs in Nepal.

Google Business Profile

If you have a location customers visit, or a service area you travel to, this is the highest-return hour of work available to you and it is free. The correct primary category, an accurate map pin, real photos, correct hours including festival closures, and a steady flow of genuine reviews.

The map pack sits above the normal results and takes most of the clicks on a phone. Businesses regularly discover they were invisible for their main category for years because the profile said something slightly wrong. Detail on the local SEO page.

Analytics and conversion tracking

Unglamorous and non-negotiable. Without it you cannot tell which channel produced an enquiry, which means every subsequent decision is guesswork and every agency report is unfalsifiable. Set up GA4, define what counts as a conversion, and track form submissions and calls. Do this before you spend on ads, not after.

Layer two: buying attention

Google Ads

What it does: puts you in front of people searching for what you sell, right now. When it is right: you need enquiries this month, or you want to find out which keywords actually convert before committing months to ranking for them. When it is wrong: your category has almost no search volume in Nepal, or your website cannot convert the traffic.

The strategic argument for running ads before SEO is underrated. Thirty to sixty days of search campaign data tells you exactly which terms produce enquiries and which produce tyre-kickers. That converts SEO from a guess into an informed investment. See Google Ads management.

Meta Ads: Facebook and Instagram

What it does: puts you in front of people who match a profile, whether or not they are looking for you. When it is right: visual products, launches, offers, retargeting people who already visited, and categories with little search volume. When it is wrong: as a substitute for search when real search demand exists.

Facebook and Instagram carry enormous reach in Nepal, which is exactly why they get over-weighted. Reach is not intent. Both matter; they answer different questions. See Meta Ads management.

Layer three: the compounding channels

SEO

What it does: earns you a position in search results that keeps producing after you stop paying. When it is right: your category has genuine search demand and you can wait four to six months for competitive terms. When it is wrong: you need revenue this quarter to survive, or nobody searches for what you sell.

SEO is three different jobs that get sold as one word. The technical layer decides whether you can rank at all. On-page decides whether Google understands the page. Off-page decides whether it trusts you enough to rank you above someone equally relevant. I have covered each separately: the complete guide to SEO in Nepal, on-page SEO and off-page SEO, plus how it actually turns into clients.

Content marketing

What it does: answers the questions buyers ask before they are ready to buy, which builds the trust and the topical depth that make your commercial pages rank. When it is wrong: as a first purchase, or as volume for its own sake.

The Nepali version of this failure is a blog full of four-hundred-word posts on generic topics, published to satisfy a monthly deliverable count. That does not build authority; it builds a pile of pages that rank for nothing and dilute the ones that could have.

Email and automation

What it does: converts people who were not ready the first time, and keeps existing customers buying. Cheapest revenue available once you have a list, and almost entirely ignored in Nepal.

Worth noting that in this market the equivalent channel is often Viber or WhatsApp rather than email, particularly for local consumer businesses. The principle is identical: own a direct line to people who already know you, instead of renting access to them from a platform.

GEO and AEO: being cited by AI

What it does: gets your business quoted inside answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, where a growing share of research now happens and no click ever reaches your site. Early enough in Nepal that the competition is thin. See GEO and AEO consulting.

Social media management, honestly

I have put this last deliberately, because it is sold first more often than anything else in Kathmandu.

Social media management — posting, community, engagement — is genuinely valuable for brand-led consumer businesses, restaurants, fashion, anything visual, and anywhere your audience already congregates. It is also the easiest service to sell, because activity is visible. You can show a client thirty posts and a follower graph without ever addressing whether the phone rang.

The question to ask is simple: when your page gained two thousand followers, did enquiries rise proportionally? If the honest answer is no, you are buying visible activity rather than customers, and the budget belongs somewhere earlier in the sequence.

The right order, by business type

Local service business in Kathmandu

Clinic, dentist, law firm, repair service, training institute. Google Business Profile and reviews, then a fast site with clear service pages, then Google Ads on your highest-intent terms, then local SEO, then content. Social last and only if your customers genuinely discover you there.

Online store

Site speed and product data first, then Meta Ads for discovery and retargeting, then Google Ads on high-intent product terms, then category-level SEO, then email and retention. Festival planning runs across all of it and starts two to three months out. Detail on ecommerce SEO in Nepal.

Export-facing business selling abroad

Trekking, IT services, handicrafts, outsourcing. Your buyer is not in Nepal, so local SEO barely matters and English-language search does. Site and trust signals first, then SEO and content because international search volume is deep enough to justify it, then paid on your proven terms. Currency in USD. See trekking and hospitality SEO.

Digital marketing agency, company or freelancer in Kathmandu

An agency suits several channels running at once with one point of contact, and the trade-off is that the person who pitched you may not be the person doing the work. An independent digital marketing consultant in Nepal suits a specific problem needing senior judgement, and the trade-off is capacity. In-house suits sustained volume once you know what works, and it is usually premature before that.

Whichever you choose, the same three questions separate serious from not: who specifically will do this work? In whose name will the accounts be created? What does the report look like in a month that goes badly? Every account should be in your name with the vendor added as a user. Anyone who resists that is telling you why. I wrote the long version as a buyer's guide to choosing an agency in Kathmandu.

Common questions

What do digital marketing services in Nepal include?

Website and conversion work, Google Business Profile, analytics, Google Ads, Meta Ads, SEO, content, email or lifecycle messaging, and social media management. The right purchase depends on the prerequisite already in place.

Which service should I buy first?

For a business with a location: Google Business Profile and a working website. Then paid ads for immediate enquiries and keyword data. Then SEO, informed by that data.

How much does it cost in Nepal?

Retainers range widely. What matters is what is included, who performs it, and how it is reported. I published sourced market rates rather than a made-up figure.

Agency or freelancer?

Agency for breadth and one point of contact. Consultant for a specific problem needing senior judgement. Ask who does the work and in whose name the accounts sit.

Is social media marketing enough?

Rarely. Social reaches people who are not looking for you; search reaches people who are. If your category has search demand and you only run social, you are ignoring buyers with money in hand.

How long until it works?

There is no responsible universal timeline. Ads can begin collecting data quickly, while local and organic search usually require sustained work and depend on the starting point, competition, technical condition and existing authority. A proposal should state its assumptions and leading indicators instead of promising a date.

Not sure where you are in the sequence?

Tell me what you sell, where your customers are, and what you have already tried. I will tell you which layer is actually missing, even when the answer is that you do not need to hire anyone yet.
